Sustainable Cashew Farming: What It Involves

Sustainability in cashews spans environmental and social ground. Both deserve a straight account rather than a marketing one.

The tree itself is fairly benign

Cashew trees are drought-tolerant, grow productively on marginal land unsuitable for most food crops, and are perennial — meaning no annual tilling and comparatively stable soil. A mature tree produces for decades. As tree crops go, cashew compares favourably with many annual alternatives on water and soil disturbance.

Processing labour is the harder issue

Shelling and peeling remain substantially manual across much of the industry. The shell contains CNSL, a caustic resin that burns skin on contact. Where protective equipment and proper steaming practices are absent, workers — predominantly women — face genuine occupational risk. This is the most serious sustainability question in the sector, and it is a labour question rather than an environmental one.

Farmer income

Raw cashew nut prices are volatile, and a large share of the value is added after the farm gate during processing. Growers frequently capture a modest portion of the final retail price. Direct sourcing relationships and multi-season purchase commitments help, but the structural gap is real and no single buyer resolves it.

The cashew apple problem

Each nut comes attached to a cashew apple weighing many times more than the nut itself. The apple is highly perishable and, in most producing regions, is left to rot. Where local processing into juice, syrup or feni exists, it adds farmer income from what is otherwise waste — but that infrastructure is patchy.

Shell waste as fuel

CNSL extracted from shells has industrial applications in resins and brake linings, and spent shells burn well as biomass fuel for the processing operation itself. Facilities that do this convert a disposal problem into an energy input. Facilities that do not simply generate waste.

What buyers can reasonably ask

If sustainability matters to your purchasing, useful questions are specific ones: Where are the nuts grown? Who processes them, and what protective practices are in place? Are purchase relationships seasonal or ongoing? What happens to the shell waste? Vague assurances about being natural and sustainable tell you nothing; answers to those four questions tell you a good deal.

Where we stand

We source from supply partners in and around Odisha and work to keep those relationships consistent across seasons rather than switching on price alone. We are not going to claim certifications we do not hold. If you have specific questions about sourcing for a wholesale requirement, ask us directly and we will answer with what we actually know.
